Video Project - What they are doing?

When I was thinking one of my short projects 'Memory', I came up with a new idea. This idea presents a concept - transition. The girls in this video are all from China and they are students studying in London. They sell food and jewelleries on Sunday Up Market every Sunday. They are foreigners and students here and they are doing something different.

Diary

I like using camera to record what happen in my life. I took photos almost everyday. I am just thinking these photos can present my life. So I decided to make work with the photos I took. I started to select photos on 31st July 2011, then printed the photo I chose on a postcard. And I decided to send one postcard to myself everyday. I just printed photos with no words to explain the photos, I think it is a new way to write diary. This idea is a start point. I want to continue it.

The little books!

I made some small books and burned cigarettes on them to get the marks. I want to show them in the final show, but I don't know which way is the best to set them. But I will keep trying.

Works about Smoking

Anthony made some works about smoking and he showed me. They are beautiful. He made 3D works and I think it is different from my works. But I think they are interesting. Thanks, Anthony.

Recent Works

Rencently, I am making cigarette marks on paper. I tried different papers to get different results. Here are some experiments.

This work was made before unit two, which was my beginning idea of burning marks of cigarettes. I like marks on the back of the picture. Then I test more different papers.

This is a handmade book I bought from Cass Art. The papers of it are not so flat, so the whole feeling is not so good. But the marks on the papers are clear.

I used different kinds of papers to make books, then I light up cigarettes on them to make marks. I got different results and I found one paper is very good to leave marks on it.

I made another five small books which are in postcard size, then I burned cigarettes on them. I am quite happy with these works. And I want to make a larger one.

These works are all my short projects. I love to do some short projects when I am doing a main project. Doing short projects can make me feel relax and happy.

'Smoking Addiction' - Made by Anthony

This work is made by Anthony. He is very nice to pay close attetion to my project.

There are three small things in the box. One you can pull the paper out, just like people alway smoke one by one. Anthony said it was like addiction. One is not completely finished yet, I think. There is cigarette paper in the box too. Anyway, thanks, Anthony. It is a intertesting thing.

Happening – Memory

I use a series of photos to make a flash. These photos I took at a crossroad near London Bridge. If I put them on the surface according to priority, they look like a moving film. However, I made them a flash, a digital way.

Of course, this method is not special, but it is interesting. In 1887, the technique of camera was not so advanced as today. Eadweard Muybridge used his camera to take many pictures to make his work ‘Cockatoo, flying, plate’. These works are amazing. The photos present every details of a happening thing.

My idea has a little similar with Eadweard Muybridge’s work. However, I do not just want to express a happening thing. I made every photo in different sizes and transparencies to express some feelings of our memory. The first picture is the biggest, but is has the least transparency. The last one is the minimum, but it is clearest. You just want to remember something, but this thing is always ‘running’.

I also did a physical work with these photos. It has different feelings. Maybe I can took a photo of it, but it is hark to ‘stand up’. However, I will take it to my unit 1 assessment.

Visitors + Work = Another Work

In Paris, I visited Louvre. I love it! I enjoy paitings, sculptures and other works in it. They are all wonderful. However, there were too many people there, so I couldn't watch every piece of work carefully. When I came back, I found many photos were people who were in front of what I wanted to take photograph of. I found it was interesting.

Because there were too many people standing in front of Venus, so I just could go back of her to take photos.

Sometimes, I think what will be look like when I am standing in front of a piece of work and thinking. At that moment, can I understand that work? Can I 'speak' to the designer who make the work? This communication between visitor and work can also be a new work.

Short Progress of Smoking

The is one of my practise about smoking. I want to show some situations of people smoking. But I haven't found suitable sound to fit this short film...And I am not good at recording and editting video, so this video is not very good for watching...

Hopefully I can do it better next time.
